Write to Rick

One of the simplest, most powerful ways to show your support is also one of the most personal: writing a letter or postcard to Rick.

Prison can be an incredibly isolating place, especially for someone fighting to prove their innocence. A kind word, a shared story, or even a joke on a postcard can make all the difference.

Why it's worthwhile

“Letters are proof that someone, somewhere, sees your humanity.”
— Prison Writers Collective

Studies have shown that people who receive mail while incarcerated are more likely to maintain their mental health, stay connected to their identity outside prison, and even have better outcomes post-release. It’s not just paper, it’s connection, community, and hope.

Rick’s days are quiet and limited, and hearing from people who support him - especially those who understand the injustice he’s endured - lifts his spirit.

Important Notes

  • Rick can receive postcards or letters, but either should be in an envelope.
  • No stickers should be attached to the envelope, letter or postcard.
  • If you send a letter with multiple pages or a card in an envelope, make sure to write his full name and DOC number on every sheet.
  • You must put a return address on the envelope itself (not with a sticker). DOC will not deliver mail if they cannot identify the sender and the recipient.
  • Keep your tone supportive, encouraging, and respectful.
  • Avoid discussing legal strategy or sharing any sensitive info, just be a human saying hello.

What to Say (If You're Not Sure)

Not everyone knows what to write at first — and that’s okay! Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Introduce yourself and where you're writing from
  • Mention something you did recently - a walk, a book, a song
  • Share encouragement, quotes, or kindness
  • Send a fun postcard with a personal message - they go a long way!

A Quick Word on Boundaries

Mail is screened by prison staff, so:

  • Don’t include money or gifts
  • Avoid stickers, glitter, or anything attached
  • Keep it PG - nothing explicit or graphic
  • No legal advice or case speculation

You Might Never Know What It Meant - But He Will

Even if Rick can’t write back to everyone, your message is read, felt, and appreciated. Every postcard is a reminder that he’s not alone, and that people still care about truth, fairness, and humanity.

If you’ve ever wondered “Will this really help?” - yes. It really does.
